FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

How do I pay for services?

Payment is due at the time of service. We accept a variety of payment methods, including cash, check, and all major credit cards. Payments can also be made conveniently through the online patient portal.

For reimbursement or other payment options, see "what are my options for payment and reimbursement?" below.

What are my options for payment and reimbursement?

Mind Stretch Psychology is a private pay practice and does not bill insurance directly. However, under the Mental Health Parity Act, insurance plans are generally required to provide comparable coverage for mental and physical health services. If your plan includes out-of-network benefits, it may reimburse a portion of your therapy costs. While navigating these benefits can feel unfamiliar at first, many clients find the process more straightforward than expected, with reimbursement often received within a few weeks.

You may also be able to use funds from a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), allowing you to use pre-tax dollars toward the cost of care.

To better understand your coverage, you can call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask:

a) Does my health insurance plan include mental health services?

b) What are my out-of-network benefits for CPT code 90834 (45-minute individual therapy)?

c) What is the coverage amount per session for an out-of-network provider?

d) Do I have an out-of-network deductible? Has it been met?

e) Does my plan limit the number of sessions per calendar year? What is the limit?

f) Is pre-approval or a referral required for services to be covered?

g) How do I submit claims for reimbursement?

h) What is the typical timeline for reimbursement?

i) Can I use FSA or HSA funds for these services?

If you do not plan to use insurance, we can provide a Good Faith Estimate outlining the expected cost of services, in accordance with the 2020 No Surprises Act. If applicable, payment may also be arranged through religious or clergy support.

Are there services that can help me understand my benefits or assist with the reimbursement process?

There are third-party services, such as Thrizer, Mentaya, and Reimbursify, that can help you review your mental health benefits and manage the claims submission process. These services are optional and typically charge a fee for their support. Please note that Mind Stretch Psychology is not affiliated with or directly connected to any of these providers.

How do I access the documentation needed to submit claims to my insurance for reimbursement?

Mind Stretch Psychology can provide superbills (statements for insurance reimbursement) to support you in seeking potential reimbursement through your insurance plan. Superbills include all of the necessary information required to submit claims for out-of-network services. You may then submit them directly to your insurance company or use a third-party service to assist with the reimbursement process, depending on your preference.

How can a family member or other designated person obtain billing documentation for reimbursement?

Access through the client:
Clients may access superbills (Statements for Insurance Reimbursement) through the patient portal. These documents can be downloaded at any time and shared with a family member or other designated individual as needed.

Direct access:
Direct access to billing information by a family member or other designated individual requires a signed Release of Information. In accordance with healthcare privacy laws (HIPAA), information for clients age 18 or older cannot be shared with third parties without this authorization. Clients may speak with their psychologist to complete a Release of Information form and grant access.

Why does Mind Stretch Psychology offer private pay?

Choosing a private pay model is an intentional way to protect both the quality and privacy of your care. It gives us the flexibility to shape sessions around your needs, rather than working within insurance limitations. It also allows for a greater level of confidentiality, as diagnoses and detailed session notes are not routinely shared with third party insurance agencies.
